Round Hayling Rowing Race: Cutters getting active again....
Dear Cutters, after the fun and games of the Hamble River raid; we are looking forward to some more fun with the ECA's inaugural event next weekend - this experimental event looks to be entertaining.
Now can I also draw your attention to another one of the big summer events in our calendar: The Round Hayling Rowing Race on 25th June 2017. Note this is OUR big home rowing weekend event.
Organising meetings have been held in the background for a number of months now with the LAR, the Langstone Cutters Gig Club and representatives from our Committee. The time has come for all the Members to get involved in making this another great success.
The RHRR started 7 years with 5 boats and last year has grown to large group of Gigs, Galleys and Skiffs; and 2017 promises to be even bigger with Clubs from near and far tempted to test themselves against this tough, handicapped race course.
This event is held in tandem with the Cutters Gig Club home regatta that takes place on the Saturday - an event for Cornish Pilot Gigs only - but one that is fun to watch from the water.
On Saturday night there is an open invitation for the Langstone Cutters Rower's Party - a celebration of the Langstone Rowing Weekend, to be held this year in the Hayling Island Community Centre. There is a band and food and, with over 200 tickets available a great fun event. Tickets are just £15 each (£10 for under 18's) and include a drink on arrival, a Chili-in-a-bag meal, a low-price bar and dancing to The Newberries - a great band that have appeared at IoW Festival. It promises to be a great celebration of rowing for Langstone, Hayling (and beyond) rowers. The Cutters has an initial allocation of 50 tickets - so please confirm your interest in having a fun evening with all your local rowing mates to:
On the Sunday we are hosting the Round Hayling Rowing Race with the Gig Club and LAR. This involves crews and boats from the Jurrassic Coast; London; Hamble and ECA locally or us this year. This event is one of the best in the Coastal Rowing Calendar and we want it to grow like the Hamble River Raid to a major event... so we need to work at it!!
So we are seeking volunteers to help with:
Catering and cakes - volunteers to man the bbq; bake cakes and sell to the visitors and other crews;
Cooking barbecue breakfast 09.00-11.00;
During the race; teas and coffees for those not taking part;
Cooking afternoon food for hungry rowers from 14.00-16.00 until the prize-giving and helping tidy away.
Meet and greet visiting rowers - a role primarily for Juniors.
An added benefit - the surplus from Sunday catering, comes back to the Club to boost our funds. Please let Chris Judd - email@example.com know of your willingness to cook-in.
From a racing point of view the Club has trophies to defend and chase including: Fastest round the Island Fastest Across the Line on Handicap; Fastest Solent Galley; fastest Ladies crew; fastest St Ayles Skiff; this year a new prize for an U18 Juniors race is on offer, which, while not the full circuit, will be a challenging longer row for those interested.
For the rowing - send your interest to Colin & Rachel via the usual Cutters Forum. (Note that this is a 2-3 hour row and the sea front leg can be challenging - depending on the boat your in and the weather - it is probably not for novices!!)
An added benefit, the rowers pay a fee to take part to pay for safety boat fuel and admin and any surplus is shared with LAR, the Gig Club and the Rowing Club.
We then need to help tidy away..
So keep the weekend free in your diary; let us know you are coming to party; let us how you can help - from baking a cake to front of house - and be prepared for a tough and competitive row...
Finally if you are willing to supply a RIB or be out on the water helping me keep the rowers safe let me know: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Re: Round Hayling Rowing Race: Cutters getting active again....
Thanks Mike for all the information. It's going to be a great weekend. I would suggest the plan forward, so we are coordinated and can see who is doing what is. The rowing captains will post a rower sign up heading and Marion or myself will post a catering signup. Any keen rib owners or rib helpers post here. Any other questions post here or ask me or Steve or Mike at rowing.
Thanks for all your participation in making this the best yet.(well I'm thinking it will be!)
I am happy to help with shore side in any way, ( this one might be a bit tough for me on water !!)
so if you want me for anything just let me know. Will book weekend out
Will email Chris as well
Both Polly and myself have kept the weekend free, and we're both very happy to row, bake a cake and help out wherever is needed etc.
I also have access to a large 4 man rib if that helps at all. It belongs to a good friend and is stored in Bracklesham Bay. He uses it to help teach his diving courses, but I'm sure he will be willing to bring it over for the race if he's not teaching or using it that weekend. Let me know if interested and I can ask him.
